How MorningHello helps an older parent and their adult child stay connected: setup, trusted contact, check-ins, postcards, and missed check-in alerts.

Staying Connected with an Older Parent Who Lives Apart

When an older parent lives on their own, their adult children want to know that they are doing well. But calling every day is not always convenient. A parent may be busy, resting, or simply want some personal space. Their son or daughter may be at work or living in another city or country.

MorningHello turns a simple check-in into a warm routine. The parent opens the app and taps “I’m OK.” This records a new check-in and restarts the interval they have chosen.

After checking in, the parent sees the postcard of the day. They can add a short personal message and, if they wish, send the postcard to a son, daughter, or someone else they care about using an app available on their iPhone. A small check-in can become a thoughtful gesture.

MorningHello does not track the parent’s location or require them to explain how they feel. It does not replace calls, visits, or time together. It helps loved ones stay connected on days when a longer conversation is difficult.

Instead of wondering, “Why haven’t they called?”, families can agree on a simple routine: open the app, tap one button, and perhaps share a postcard.

How to set it up

The parent adds at least one trusted contact, such as an adult son or daughter. They can add a second contact for extra reassurance.

Each trusted contact confirms by email that they agree to receive alerts. Until they confirm, they do not take part in the alert process.

The parent chooses a check-in interval of 24, 48, or 72 hours. They need to tap “I’m OK” again before that interval ends.

What happens if a check-in is missed

MorningHello uses two separate mechanisms:

  • A reminder on the parent’s iPhone prompts them to open the app and check in.

  • If no new check-in reaches the server within the chosen interval, the server sends an alert to confirmed contacts by email and WhatsApp.

An alert does not necessarily mean that something has happened. It prompts a loved one to contact the parent and make sure they are okay. A missed check-in may simply be due to sleep, a busy day, a switched-off phone, no internet connection, or forgetfulness.

Benefits for the parent

  • One simple action, with no need for lengthy messages.

  • Independence and personal space.

  • Postcards and kind wishes that make the routine feel warmer.

  • A choice of 24, 48, or 72 hours between check-ins.

  • The freedom to choose whether and to whom to send a postcard.

Benefits for a son or daughter

  • Reassurance when the parent checks in.

  • Less need to call solely to make sure everything is okay.

  • An alert if the parent misses their chosen check-in interval.

  • A way to share warmth through postcards.

  • The option to add a second confirmed contact.

An important limitation

MorningHello is not a medical, rescue, or emergency service. It does not track location or guarantee delivery of every alert. If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services and use other ways to reach them.
